Principles of Design

Why are they important?

The principles of design are important in any work of art or design. They are the tools you will use (even unknowingly) to make your creations looks nicer and more visually appealing. Without these principles, it can be difficult for viewers to understand what you as a designer are trying to communicate.

Some of these principles naturally make your image stand out or catch people's attention. For example contrast, emphasis and proportion. Whilst others can make your work more pleasing to the eye, such as harmony, balance, and rhythm.

It is rare to use every principle at once but almost all works of art and design will use at least one, even abstract art or optical illusions use two or more to create an image that is visually appealing.
